This table is a common starting point, not a fixed rule. Make the final decision with samples and testing.
A quick rule of thumb
- Visual quality, leather, straight lines: Metal
- Curves, flexibility, lightness: Nylon coil
- Outdoor use, coloured teeth: Molded plastic
- Hidden zipper: Invisible
Four questions to ask
- How thick is the fabric?
- Will the zipper carry a load?
- Will the product be washed or dyed?
- Will it be used outdoors or in salt water?

| Product | Type | Size | End and slider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather jacket | Metal | Size 5-10 | Open-end, auto-lock |
| Backpack | Coil | Size 5-10 | Closed-end, two sliders, non-locking |
| Tent, sleeping bag | Coil, molded | Size 3-8 | Two sliders, reversible slider |
| Covers, marine | Molded, coil | Size 5-10 | Chain, plastic slider |

| Workwear | Metal, molded | Size 5-10 | Open-end or closed-end |
Example: a long parka
The fabric is heavy, the coat gets washed and it is worn outdoors. Molded Size 8, open-end with two sliders is a good start. Opening from the bottom when seated is a real comfort. Then sew a sample onto your fabric and test it in washing. See the X and O guide and closed-end vs open-end.
