Quick comparison
| Feature | Metal zipper | Nylon zipper |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Varies with size and production | Varies with size and production |
| Weight | Heavier | Light |
| Flexibility | Best on straight seams | Follows curved seams |
| Look | Decorative, plated finishes | Same colour as tape, understated |
| Typical product | Jeans, leather jackets, bags, boots | Jackets, bags, home textiles, outdoor |
When to choose a metal zipper
If you want the zipper to be a visible design detail, metal is a good choice. It is widely used on jeans, leather jackets and bags. Finishes from nickel to antique brass help express your brand identity.
When to choose a nylon zipper
If lightness, flexibility and colour matching come first, a nylon (coil) zipper is the better fit. It works well on curved pockets, cushions and upholstery, jackets and outdoor products.
The advantage of working with one supplier
MAK Zipper manufactures metal and nylon zippers under one roof, and also produces molded zippers and zipper by the metre, so you can source a whole collection from one supplier and keep colours and finishes consistent. Not sure which one fits? Request samples of both.
Decision table
| Need | Good choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Denim, leather, visual impact | Metal | Separate teeth and plated finishes give a distinct look |
| Curved seams, low weight | Nylon coil | The spiral flexes and runs easily on light fabric |
| Salt water, outdoors | Molded plastic | Plastic teeth do not rust and weigh less than metal of the same size |
| A hidden closure | Invisible coil | The tape folds behind the teeth, so it looks like a seam when closed |
Is metal always stronger?
No. "Metal is stronger" is not a safe rule. Strength also depends on size, tape and production. See the zipper size guide for sizing and the molded zipper guide for the chunky plastic option.
