How wide is a Size 8 zipper?
Size 8 measures roughly 7 to 9 mm. Metal and molded plastic zippers of the same number can differ slightly, and the exact width is confirmed on a sample. See our zipper size guide for details.
Where is a Size 8 zipper used?
- Heavy coats and parkas: In open-end models.
- Bags: On large, load-bearing designs.
- Boots: In metal or coil.
- Luggage: As two-way coil or molded plastic.
- Tent doors: Where the zipper is opened often.
- Workwear: On heavy fabrics.
What to check when choosing
Larger sizes are bulkier and generally carry more load, but they add weight and are more visible. If loads are modest, Size 5 may be enough. The slider must also match both the size and the chain type.
Size 8 measurement range
| Type | Closed width (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Metal (Size 7/8) | 8.10-8.20 mm |
| Molded | 8.50-8.60 mm |
| Nylon coil | 7.10-7.20 mm |
| JIS class (medium-heavy) | 7.0-8.5 mm |
Width changes with chain type at the same size. One European catalogue also lists Size 8 plastic at 9.0 mm and metal at 8.0 mm. So "Size 8" alone is not enough; state the type too.
Which products suit Size 8?
- Coats and parkas: Molded or coil, open-end. Two sliders help on long models.
- Boots: Metal or coil, closed-end.
- Suitcases and large bags: Coil or molded, closed-end with two sliders.
On light fabric Size 8 looks heavy and the fabric can ripple. If unsure, compare with Size 5. For heavier work see Size 10.
