How wide is a Size 3 zipper?
A Size 3 zipper's closed chain is usually around 4 mm wide, and the exact width is confirmed on a sample. The number is a size class, not an exact measurement. Our zipper size guide explains why.
Where is a Size 3 zipper used?
- Dresses and skirts: Especially as invisible coil zippers.
- Blouses and light trousers: It stays discreet on thin fabric.
- Light jackets and sweatshirts: Sufficient when the fabric is thin.
- Cushions and bedding: As coil or continuous chain.
- Tent mesh panels: Where loads are low.
Which types come in Size 3?
A Size 3 can be metal, nylon coil, molded plastic or invisible. Coil is often preferred on thin fabric because it is light and flexible. Metal Size 3 suits products where the zipper is a visible detail.
When should you go larger?
If the fabric is thick, the zipper takes frequent stress or the product carries weight, look at Size 5 or above. Testing a sample with your fabric is the safest way to decide.
Size 3 measurement range
| Type | Closed width (approx.) | Source note |
|---|---|---|
| Metal | 4.30-4.40 mm | Turkish course notes |
| Molded | 4.40-4.50 mm | Turkish course notes |
| Nylon coil | 3.80-4.20 mm | Turkish course notes |
| JIS class (light) | 4.0-5.5 mm | Standard range |
The table shows why a size is not an exact millimetre value. Small differences exist between makers, so ask for a sample when the measurement matters.
Choosing a Size 3 slider
A slider must match both the size and the chain type. A Size 3 metal slider will not fit Size 3 nylon coil. The rules are in the slider compatibility guide. For the next size up, see the Size 5 zipper guide.
